Meet your guide in the lobby of the hotel and go to the historic city center of La Paz. Your tour starts at the central station of the red cable car. In addition to your English speaking team, a "special" guide will show you the city in his own way. A shoe shiner will accompany you all morning. After a cable car ride, you will visit different markets. At the potato market, you will experience the distinctive smell and taste of a variety of dehydrated potatoes, like las tuntas and los chuños. You will experience the fish market, where goods arrive every morning between 3.30 and 5am as the cholitas prepare their stands. Afterwards, you will visit the shops where the cholitas paceñas buy their outfit’s colorful pleated skirts worn over layers of petticoats, embroidered shawls held by a brooch, and small bowler hats. As you will learn, being in fashion is expensive! We then take a break for lunch. We will eat at Ali Pacha, the universe of plants. Let yourself be surprised and enjoy its unique menu made from exotic Bolivian ingredients. In the afternoon, you will walk the city, visiting its colorful markets, colonial district, Murillo main square and the art galleries of Jaen street. We close the day with dinner at Gustu, one of the best restaurants in South America. Its "tasting" menu will delight your taste buds, blending ancestral knowledge of traditional cuisine with Bolivian grown and harvested food.

We depart for the Laguna Chiarkhota. We head west along the Laguna Tuni and go up a valley towards the northeast. We gradually climb to a beautiful valley at the foot of the Condoriri massif. We pass the Laguna Chiarkhota, base camp at the “Head of the Condor,” and the “Pequeño Alpamayo”. Just seeing these magical places is worth the effort to get there. We explore the glacier that leads to the Pequeño Alpamayo, where we get a breathtaking view of the “Head of the Condor” and its majestic glacier. We take a progressively more difficult trail to bypass the Laguna Chiarkhota to the Col Austria at the foot of the Condoriri (5140 m /16,863 FT). A steep and screed slope awaits us as we climb up to Pico Austria (5300m /17388 FT. Again, the effort is worth it. The view is amazing, and it feels as if we were there standing on the massif. We return to Tuni by the same path and spend the evening enjoying the music from a folkloric group from the neighboring village of Chuñawi (subject to availability).

Of special note is its church, which was rebuilt stone-by-stone at a cost of almost half a million dollars. We stop to explore the Valley of Rocks. Erosion created strangely shaped rocks several meters high, almost as if by magic. Before reaching our destination, we take a short photo-op at a panoramic viewpoint of a magnificent canyon. We arrive in the village of Villamar in the late afternoon.

We make the ascent, climbing up a steep scree, to the edge of the crater (4950 m above sea level/ 16.240 FT) and the heart of the volcano. An old mining operation lies in ruins. Fumes in the air create amazing colors. Weather permitting, we go beyond the crater to a pass located above it. The summit offers an incredible panorama on both the Bolivian and Chilean sides. We head out in the morning and start an ascent to the cumbre (4.750 m above sea level/15.584 FT). The descent by bike is crazy, twisting and turning, with steep precipices off the side of the road. You will understand why it is referred to as the Death Road. As we descend, the landscape becomes greener, the air more humid, and the wind warmer. We lose more than 3,500 meters in elevation between the summit and Yolosa (1,100 m alt.). We get in a car and head up 7 steep kilometers (650 m height difference) to Coroico, a paradise of a village in the Yungas where we enjoy a good buffet.
