Ciudad Roma and the Samawa Valley: Hidden Landscapes in the Heart of Sud Lípez
In the southern reaches of Bolivia, far from traditional routes, unfold some of the country’s most secluded and striking landscapes.
Near Guadalupe, the Andean high plateau reveals a dramatic setting. At 4,180 meters above sea level, a gentle ascent leads to a border pass opening onto the distant peaks of the Nevado and Bonete mountains.
Below, flaming-hued canyons and geological formations shaped over time create a powerful mineral world of rare intensity.
The exploration continues toward Ciudad Roma, a natural “city” of monumental rock columns sculpted by erosion. Further along, Thola Mayu extends this experience with its vast mineral sculptures, resembling an open-air gallery where stone appears almost alive.
Deeper south, the Samawa Valley reveals another side of Lípez. Red canyons, hoodoos, and isolated hamlets shape a raw and little-known landscape, offering one of the most exclusive experiences in the region.
The name Samawa itself tells part of the story: it was born from the encounter between Santos, Martín, and Walter, the three drivers who were the first to explore this remote territory on the edge of Argentina.
A rare immersion into a preserved natural world, blending vastness, authenticity, and understated elegance.
