Escape from La Paz

A popular holiday destination for the inhabitants of La Paz, the small town of Coroico, just 2 hours’ drive from the capital, is a breath of fresh air and nature for the people of La Paz, far from the noise, pollution and rare oxygen. Coroico has also made a name for itself with foreign tourists: what a pleasant place to rest after a long trek in the Cordillera Real, or after riding for several weeks in the arid, cold and inhospitable lands of the altiplano. Coroico is also the arrival point for two major attractions in the La Paz region: the trek del Choro, a hike that normally takes 3 days and links La Cumbre to Coroico, and the famous Death Road, which many amateur cyclists ride down every weekend in search of thrills on what used to be the deadliest road in the world. Both the Choro trek and the Death Road start at the Cumbre pass, a 45-minute drive from La Paz, and end near Coroico. After a 3-day hike or an adrenalin-fuelled day on the bike, it’s worth spending a few days lounging by the pool in Coroico, isn’t it?

High-quality coffee and cocoa

Coroico is also a land of cultivation, with many products grown here to supply the capital. In fact, thanks to its warm, humid climate, many fruits, high-quality coffee, cocoa and coca are produced in the valley. A must in Coroico? Visit a finca, the farm where coffee is grown and then produced, from the tree to the final product. The one in Munaipata, renowned for its high-quality coffee, is a great idea for a visit, with a tasting session at the end, of course!

An adventure playground

In Coroico, you can also go hiking, horse-riding, to the different peaks in the region, or to the different waterfalls, or through the coffee or coca fields. If you’re looking for a bit of adrenalin, this is a very popular place for rafting and canyoning, with class 3 rapids and even class 4 rapids in some cases, making the rivers in this region some of the most famous in Bolivia. After your descent of the Death Road by mountain bike and a day of rafting and canyoning, are you still craving thrills? Take a paragliding flight from Cerro Uchumachi and fly over the entire Coroico valley, enjoying the magnificent scenery and the feeling of freedom!

Our favourite hotel

But Coroico is above all about peace and quiet, so treat yourself to a few days of wellbeing at the Sol y Luna lodge, for example, where you can enjoy the pretty cabins scattered among the exuberant vegetation, or take a dip in one of the two swimming pools, enjoy a massage or take part in one of the yoga classes – relaxation and serenity guaranteed!
