TARIJA - CHAPACA COUNTRYSIDE & BODEGAS – TARIJA

This day is dedicated to the visit of Tarija’s surroundings. Once your guide will pick you up at the airport, you will go to the Lake San Jacinto, the favorite holiday area of Tarijeños (chapacos). From there, the view on the valley of Tarija and the Sama Cordillera is amazing. Then, you will head towards the nearby countryside, offering similar landscapes to the French provence, pine forests and scrubland. Then, we arrive to Coimata, very popular site where chacapos spend their week-ends. It is a very nice place hidden in a small valley, offering beautiful natural pools and refreshing waterfalls. After that, we reach the village of San Lorenzo, where we discover the house of « El Moto Méndez », a hero of Tarija’s Republic. We taste the delicious empañadas de membrillos (quince turnover) and rosquetes (local pastery, round shape, covered by sugar ice). We go back to Tarija, passing by the village of Tomatitas, where we continue our tasting with the humintas (prepared with corn, cheese and served in a corn leave). The morning finishes, so we stop for a typical lunch break, to taste the famous Pig Cross. It is as well a specialty from Argentina (barbecue pig). After tasting all these local meals, we will now spend the afternoon this tasting wine!! We will visit 2 bodegas* very famous in Tarija, the Campos de Solana one, that offers excellent wines, and the Casa Real one, that produces Singani, the bolivian eau de vie. We finish the visit by the Casa Vieja, one of the first artisanal bodegas of the region. The place is very old and is worth having a look. The boss will welcome you with an unforgettable show. There is as well a restaurant in the house, in a nice patio. To finish the day, we go back to Tarija passing by the canyon Angostura.

TARIJA – INCA WAY - CALDERILLAS & PINOS VILLAGES- TARIJA

Today you will wake up at daybreak to do the Inca Way. In the pre-Inca time, this region was populated by the Chichas people (aymara tribe) that used to talk a language called Kumsa. After 3 hours’ drive, you will get to the Sama Cordillera, on the high plateau. You will start the path at a windy pass, at 3.665 meters of altitude. You fill follow a stone path, and feel a very beautiful atmosphere. The view clears up on a green valley at the back, the Calderillas valley, that will be our first objective of the day. Little by little, the temperatures go up. We stop to observe some very old prints on a rock. Then, we continue the descent until the Calderillas village. It is a very peaceful place. This little village is isolated, it is located on a plateau at 3.100 meters of altitude, half way between the Altiplano and the Tarija valley. It is possible to sleep in this green little village to avoid the achingo of this crazy descent and make a break. After the village, we enter in a stream and swing between a bank and the other. The path is still magnificent and surrounded sometimes by queñuas forests. Then, we will need to go up until a pass at 2.990m of altitude. The view on the valley of Tarija is just magnificent. The condors fly above our heads. After this break, we start the last crazy descent until the Pinos village, still on a beautiful paved way. The heat becomes very strong; we look for some shade. The vegetation and landscapes are very similar to the French provence. When we arrive along the stream in the Pinos Village we feel refreshed. We arrive at 2220 meters of altitude after having gone down by 1600 meters of cumulative height difference. An amazing day is awating you!

Altitude +115m/-1625m. Good to know: it is totally possible to do this trek in two days.
