Discovery of Tupiza

The last stop before Argentina for travelers heading south, Tupiza is a rugged frontier town with and feels in many ways like the edge of the world.  A harsh landscape of steep mountains and deep canyons mark reflect the city’s fiercely independent mentality.  Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid made their last stand here in an isolated mission on the altiplano.

Tourists can explore the area on horseback or mountain bike.  Don’t miss Bolivia’s wine region around Tarija.  About 1000 meters lower than Tupiza, this area is rich with vineyards producing fruity and light varieties of reds.  Visitors say this area has a vaguely Andalusia feel—its rich foods pair well with local wines to delight gourmets and gourmands. Nearby cave paintings and paleontological sites make great day trips.

Tarija represents a great starting point to discover the South of Lipez.
