The glacial ascent, a TOP adventure, between dream and danger

During a glacial ascent, the “simple” fact of stepping on a glacier is already an adventure. The glaciers hold number of dangers, subtle traps, bad surprises that have sometimes beaten the best mountaineers. And yet, these glaciers make us dream, they create an irresistible attraction. We imagine ourselves climbing them, waking on these huge white plateaux, with round and soft shapes. When we see them, we don’t imagine the dangers. It’s when we start to know them, when we have done several glacial ascents, that we discover other aspects, more cruel ones, of the mountain. But that’s what we are looking for when it comes to mountains, a real adventure with big A, danger, remoteness, challenge, loneliness, interior peace and a huge joy when we reach and conquer the summit and feel unique.

Glacial ascent in Europe or Himalaya, a trendy phenomenon

Unfortunately, most of the time, it is difficult to feel this remoteness and this adventure feeling when you do a glacial ascent in the Alpes or in the Pyrenees., because there are so many people on the European glaciers that are highly visited. The paths are marked, the marks are well marked on the glaciers, you see roped parties in front of you and behind you. It has as well became the case for the most famous mountains in Himalaya, like Everest and even the K2, the most dangerous and wildest. All the summits have been conquered. The young mountaineers look for adventure while performing another kind of mountaineering, half trail half mountaineering, trying to beat speed records, original ways to climb mountains. The best ones would go for more dangerous routes to be renown, putting their lives in danger. It changed a lot since the glorious time of the mountaineer’s explorers of the 19th century, that would get to 8000m for the first time.
